This is our latest dal that gets served with phulkas for dinner and something that even the boys love to eat. Finding a dal that my kids would eat has been a big task. Over the years we have been trying different ones, however kids are so averse to dal and would prefer kurma anytime.

How to make the Kootu
Wash and cube the Chayote. Wash and clean the dals together.
In a pressure cooker, take the dals along with the vegetable. Add turmeric powder. Add enough water and pressure cook for couple of whistles or till the dal is cooked. Keep it aside for the pressure to fall.

Saute well till the onions gets browned. Then add the red chili powder, combine everything well.
Now add chopped tomatoes, cook well till the tomatoes turn mushy.
When the masala is cooked well, add the cooked dal and enough water. Bring to boil and simmer when the dal thickens.
Simmer for 5 mins and switch off, serve with phulkas

So when out of the moon, I tried the dal with Phulka, with loads of ghee and they simply loved it. Ever since that incident, this dal and phulka has become our dinner items. I quite look forward to make this as we don't seem to include chow chow in any other form that I cook, be it the chow chow sambar or poriyal. I have even made a halwa of it.
This kootu uses both the dals, toor and moong. It has a creamy texture and the softly cooked vegetable with the dal tastes out of the world.
